I’ve been furnishing flats and houses for over ten years and often work with my clients from moving day onwards. Almost every conversation starts with furniture, wall colors and flooring. We usually only talk about light once I bring it up.
A move asks a surprising number of decisions of you in a short space of time. You choose furniture, compare wall colors, think about floors and curtains, and keep your everyday life running on the side. In my consulting work I see every week how demanding this phase can be, even when the excitement outweighs it.
Light is almost always right at the bottom of that long list. That’s understandable, because a lamp seems like a detail that can be sorted out later. In my experience, the opposite is true. No piece of furniture and no wall color changes the mood of a room as much as the light it appears in.

When I plan a lighting concept, I never think in individual lamps but in layers. Each layer has its own job in the room, and only their interplay creates that calm, warm atmosphere you know from good hotels or carefully furnished homes.
We’ll now go through these four layers one by one, in exactly the order I plan them in my own projects.
The ambient light is the first light source you notice when you enter a room. It provides orientation and base brightness, and it determines how the room comes across at first glance.
The most common mistake I see after a move is light at the ceiling that’s too cold or too glaring. Often it’s simply the bulb from the DIY store that was screwed in quickly on the first evening. The room then feels like a workshop, no matter how beautiful the furniture is.
My solution is always the same. Even the ambient light should be warm white and dimmable. That way the ceiling lamp carries the brightness during the day and blends discreetly into the mood in the evening instead of disturbing it.
In open living spaces, structure is often what’s missing after moving in. Everything is in its place, and still the room feels like one single large surface. This is exactly where I work with floor lamps. A well-placed floor lamp defines a reading corner or a seating group purely through light, without you having to change anything structurally.
Then there’s its presence during the day. A beautiful floor lamp works like a sculpture in the room and carries the interior even when it isn’t switched on. That’s why, after the ambient light, it’s the second decision I make with my clients.
Table lamps are the layer that actually creates coziness in the evening. On a side table, a console or by the dining table they create small, warm islands where the eye comes to rest.
What I hear afterwards is telling. When I ask my clients months later which light source has become most important to them, most don’t name the big ceiling lamp but exactly these small lights. They’re what turns a furnished room into a home that’s lived in.
The entrance area is the most underrated room I know. And yet it’s the first impression you get of your own home every single day. A warm accent light on the wall turns a functional passageway into a place that welcomes you.
Right after moving in, I have one very concrete tip for this. There are now cordless wall lamps with a battery that hold magnetically and need no drilling. Freshly painted walls stay untouched, and in a rented flat you don’t have to fill any holes when you move out. For my clients in rented flats, that’s regularly the solution that surprises them most.
